Sweden: Launch of the Chalmers Maritime University to "attract more students to become naval officers"

The Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden has launched the Chalmers Maritime University to "meet the needs of the maritime industry and attract more students to pursue a career with bright prospects", it announced on 22/01/2026.

The institution indicated that training programmes for sea captains, naval officers and marine engineers will now be gathered in an independent unit in Gothenburg. "The new structure provides clearer conditions for developing both research and collaboration with industry in the long term," stated the university.

Formally established on 01/01/2026, the Chalmers Maritime University consist of the activities and staff previously part of the Division of Maritime Studies within the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences. Organisationally, it is a unit reporting directly to the President and forms an integrated part of Chalmers University of Technology.

The university will also form a maritime council with internal and external representatives, to serve as an advisory body within education, research and continuing education. The aim is to further…
