Dutch education organisations highlight key challenges of AI in education and the need for EU guidelines

The Netherlands House for Education and Research (Neth-ER), an association of the Dutch knowledge sector in Brussels, held a webinar on the key challenges and opportunities AI could bring to education on 27/01/2026, in collaboration with Nuffic, the Dutch organisation for internationalisation in education, and MBO Raad, the professional association for schools in secondary vocational education and adult education in the Netherlands.

Neth-ER highlighted key challenges when integrating AI into education, such as digital autonomy and concerns about ethics, privacy, and security; AI literacy and lack of knowledge and skills; financial and structural support for schools; limited awareness and uncertainty about application; loss of critical thinking, creativity, and basic skills; and issues with assessment and oversight due to rapid changes in the digital field.

"49% of 17 to 27-year-olds struggle with critically evaluating and identifying AI’s shortfalls, such as whether AI systems can invent facts," Neth-ER said.
