EUA report urges universities to adopt a “human-centric” and “micro-ambitious” approach to AI

As artificial intelligence continues to disrupt the steady continuum of digital change in higher education, a report from the European University Association (EUA), published on 29/01/2025, argues that institutions must move beyond experimentation toward strategies rooted in core academic values.

The final report of the EUA Task-and-Finish Group on Artificial Intelligence, titled “Adopting AI that serves the needs and values of universities,” provides a framework for navigating the ethical, strategic and regulatory complexities of the AI era.

The report’s primary finding is that AI adoption must be a participative, human-centric endeavour. While technology vendors often promote efficiency as a primary selling point, the EUA emphasises that “efficiency in itself is not a core value” in an academic context. Instead, the report suggests that curiosity, reflection and the freedom to explore are the virtues that drive discovery.
