EU countries and regions offer 101 schemes worth over €1bn to attract global research talent

EU member states and regions have set up 101 initiatives for funding and support worth over €1 billion to attract, retain and develop global research talent.

On 30/01/2026, the European Commission brought together the 101 schemes on a single platform, EURAXESS, to make it easier “for global talent to identify opportunities across Europe”, the Commission said.

EURAXESS is a pan-European initiative designed to foster researchers’ mobility and career development. The listed initiatives, including competitive grants, mobility and reintegration programmes, tenure-track and long-term positions, fellowships for researchers at risk, and broader career development support, are available in all 27 member states.

According to European Commission data, the number of initiatives increased from 65 in May 2025 to over 100.

These initiatives complement the total of €874 million announced as part of the "Choose Europe: Advance Your Research Career in the EU" plan for the period 2025-2027. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on 05/05/2025 that €500m would be available. Since…
