Four university and scientific networks call for stronger recognition of their role in science diplomacy

Four university associations and scientific networks have called for a stronger recognition of the role of academic and university networks in advancing science diplomacy.

The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities, the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA), the U7+ Alliance of World Universities and the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Association published a statement on 10/02/2026 asking for "better recognition of the proactive but often discreet role of scientific networks of universities and academics for science diplomacy". This role included "underpinning trust, carrying out vital science diplomacy and contributing to global decision-making," the four groups said.

The document says that scientific networks act as independent and responsible actors, building long-term, trust-based international partnerships that complement formal diplomacy while maintaining scientific autonomy.
