Karl Stoeckel appointed director of Civis European Universities Alliance

Karl Stoeckel, former deputy director for Europe in the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), has been appointed Director of the Civis European Universities Alliance at Aix-Marseille Université, France, according to a LinkedIn post on 11/02/2026.

Before working at IRD, he was Aix-Marseille Université's representative in Brussels for seven years. He succeeds Marie Wittamer, who has held this position since May 2020.

While in Brussels, Karl Stoeckel was also:
• member of the secretariat of the UnILion network (the network of informal university liaison offices);
• and national coordinator for the Council of the EU's 'ConSIMium' initiative, a simulation experience organised by the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU, offering university students a first-hand insight into the EU decision-making process.

Previously, he worked for France Universités, the conference of French university presidents, and the Mutuelle des étudiants. He has degrees in law and public administration, specialising in international relations.
