The European Commission has set university alliances an ambitious goal to increase the international experience of their students. But as increasing the percentage of students who physically travel to study aboard under the Erasmus+ programme is limited by cost and other barriers to moving, institutions are looking at other ways to make the studying experience more international. These are the views of a senior expert from the alliance sector.

Frédéric Renouard is Officer for Internationalisation at the Directorate of International Affairs and Relations of the University of Rennes, France, and a former coordinator of the EDUC alliance at Rennes. In an interview with News Tank, he explains how alliances are responding to this target and finding other ways to internationalise the student experience.

He argues that achieving the goal of adapting education requires relying on additional forms of internationalisation, particularly by internationalising local programmes through inter-institutional cooperation between members of university alliances.
