Spanish State Research Agency sets out new 2026-2028 strategy around internationalisation and equality

The Spanish State Research Agency (AEI) has approved its Strategic Plan 2026-2028 and the Action Plan 2026 to strengthen funding, internationalisation and equality in Spanish science, it announced on 11/02/2026.

The Strategic Plan 2026-2028 and the Action Plan 2026 were previously approved by the Governing Council in December 2025 and set out the Agency’s strategic institutional roadmap for the coming years, with planned actions and measures to be carried out.

The Strategic Plan 2026-2028 is framing the Agency’s activities within the promotion of scientific excellence, efficiency in the management of public resources and adaptation to the challenges of research in Spain. It is structured around six key strategic lines :
• the introduction of intelligence-driven approaches to handling inquiries ;
• the promotion of Spanish participation in international programmes and collaborations ;
• the optimisation of internal resources and the simplification of procedures ;
