European Commission asks for input on measures to ease the housing shortage

The European Commission has launched a call for evidence on measures to alleviate pressure on the housing market. It has also published a questionnaire.

The institution invited on 06/03/2026 "interested parties" to provide their views to "feed into the preparations of the Affordable Housing Act". The initiative will be presented in the third quarter of 2026 and seeks to establish a "clear and stable regulatory framework that enables public authorities to identify areas experiencing housing stress".

The questionnaire will be open until 29/03/2026 and the call for evidence until 03/04/2026.

The Affordable Housing Act is part of the first European Affordable Housing Plan presented by the Commission on 16/12/2025, which aims to address the need for affordable, sustainable and good-quality housing. The institution identified students and young people as one of the groups most affected by housing shortages.
