Germany receives EU funding to support hydrogen research and innovation

Germany will receive €4.6 billion from the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) to support research and innovation into hydrogen and other activities related to the green transition, digitalisation and education and training, the European Commission announced on 13/03/2026.

Part of the money will support hydrogen research projects under Germany's National Hydrogen Strategy by helping to overcome economic and technological barriers related to this clean energy source.

Other measures funded by the money include supporting the green transition through energy-efficient renovations of buildings, subsidies for nearly 400,000 electric vehicles and the expansion of more than 2,500 public charging stations. They also focus on improving the efficiency and digitalisation of public administration, which will digitise 40 state-level public services and reduce administrative burdens for citizens and businesses.

This is Germany’s third payment under the RRF, which provides grants and loans to EU member states to mitigate the economic impact of COVID-19.
