Cyprus' EU Presidency commits to supporting teachers amid AI changes in education

The Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU said that teachers and trainers were its priority, as they need support, particularly in light of the changes brought about by artificial intelligence in education.

Speaking to the European Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) on 18/03/2026, Athena Michaelidou, Cyprus' minister of education, sport and youth, said: "We see teachers and trainers as a fundamental pillar. We are exploring ways to strengthen their role, particularly regarding attractiveness and professional development. We have to provide support for them, as they will need to face the challenges brought by AI in schools and education."

Cyprus, which holds the rotating Presidency of the EU Council until the end of June, aims to secure agreement on Council conclusions on education in the age of AI at a meeting of EU ministers for education on 11/05/2026.
