EU invests €330 million in fusion energy, nuclear technology and research

The European Commission has adopted the work programme for the 2026 and 2027 Euratom Research and Training Programme, which allocates €330 million to the advancement of nuclear research, innovation and training,

A primary objective of the work programme, which was adopted on 19/03/2026, is the development of fusion energy, as €222m is to bring fusion technologies from laboratories to power grids in the EU. Supporting this development includes establishing a new European public-private partnership for fusion, supporting emerging fusion start-ups through the European Innovation Council (EIC) while attracting private investment, and prioritising fundamental fusion research and the development of fusion-skilled talents.

The programme’s remaining €108m will fund innovation and safety in nuclear fission, including research on the long-term operation of current nuclear power plants, advanced reactors, nuclear fuels, radiation protection and the safe management of radioactive waste.
