CERN to host next expansion phase of Open Research Europe

The European Organisation for Nuclear Research, known as CERN, will serve as the operating and hosting organisation for the new phase of expansion of Open Research Europe (ORE), an open-access publishing platform, it announced on 26/03/2026.

ORE, created in 2021 and funded by the European Commission, is a platform that allows researchers it funds to publish their work openly and transparently. In 2026, the platform will enter a new phase of expansion to become a collective effort supported by 16 national funders and research institutions across Europe.

The consortium funding the new ORE platform currently comprises institutes from Germany, Austria, Spain, France, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland. The European Commission participates as a permanent observer on the governing body and provides specific funding for the project.

This expansion will widen eligibility beyond researchers funded by the European Commission, opening the platform to a broader research community.
