EP budgets committee backs call to increase Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ budgets for 2028-2034 by 10%

MEPs have backed a report on the EU's 2028-2034 budget, calling for a 10% increase in funding for all policy programmes, including Horizon Europe and Erasmus+, compared to the European Commission's proposals.

MEPs on the budgets (BUDG) committee voted on 15/04/2026 by a majority to approve a report drafted by Siegfried Mureşan, a Romanian deputy from the centre-right EPP group, and Carla Tavares, a Portuguese MEP from the centre-left S&D groups. This report calls for a budget that uses the full financing potential of 1.27% of the EU27's combined Gross National Income (GNI).

The vote was 26 for, nine against and five abstentions.

In July 2025, the Commision proposed a total budget, the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), of €1,816 billion. The Parliament in the report approved on 15/04/2026 is calling for a total of €2,014bn (+€198bn).

The MEPs want the funding for Horizon Europe to be increased from €175bn (in current prices) in the Commission proposal to €200bn (+€25bn). For Erasmus+, they want the amount to be increased to €47bn, an increase of €6.6bn compared to the original…
