Jan Danckaert is reelected as Rector of Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Jan Danckaert has been reelected as Rector of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Belgium for another four years.

The Board of the university reelected Danckaert, who was the only candidate running for his own succession, with 79.30% of the votes on 04/05/2026. He still reached the electoral quorum in all five electoral groups (independent academic staff, other academic staff, students, administrative and technical staff, and staff of the university hospital). His second term will start in September 2026.

“The coming four years must focus on the future, on new opportunities, new forms and ideas. Because we all shape the future together,” Danckaert said.

Danckaert campaigned on his policy plan, emphasising how the VUB has "consistently taken on a pioneering role throughout its history, in groundbreaking research, innovative education programmes and strong societal engagement".

He intends to continue this ambition without compromise, despite the significant budget cuts facing the university community, the university added.
