European Commission establishes committee to renew the ERC Scientific Council

The European Commission has established a committee to oversee the renewal of the European Research Council's (ERC) Scientific Council, its governing body.

The Commission announced on 07/05/2026 that Martin Vetterli, Paula Eerola, Heino Falcke, Katerina Harvati, Andres Metspalu and Maria Rescigno will identify new members of the ERC Scientific Council in preparation for Horizon Europe 2028-2034.

Martin Vetterli, who will chair the Identification Committee, is Honorary Professor and President Emeritus of L’École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. He will be accompanied by:

• Paula Eerola, President of the Research Council of Finland;
• Heino Falcke, Professor at Radboud University Nijmegen, Netherlands;
• Katerina Harvati, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, Director of the Department of Geosciences and Senckenberg Centre for Human Evolution and Palaeoenviroments, Germany;
• Andres Metspalu, Professor at University of Tartu, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), Institute of Genomics (IG), Estonia;
