European education ministers have agreed on their position on the Erasmus+ regulation for 2028-2034, returning powers of scrutiny to the member states.

During the Education Council held on 11/05/2026, education ministers adopted their position on the Erasmus+ programme for 2028-2034. It "strengthened the role of member states", said Athena Michaelidou, Minister of Education, Sport and Youth of the Republic of Cyprus, presiding over the Council.

Ministers reinstated the programme committee that exists under the current Erasmus+ programme. This committee is composed of representatives of the Commission and national authorities and helps decide priorities, actions and budgets of Erasmus+. They also introduced two separate categories of work programme, via which actions under Erasmus+ shall be implemented:
• a new action work programme for new actions under direct management that have been proposed by the Commission;
• a regular work programme for actions that continue to receive financing after their initial implementation.
