New Hungarian Prime Minister appoints Education and Science ministers after Europe-themed inauguration

The new Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has appointed Judit Lannert, an educational researcher and deputy chief scientific director of the National Institute of Public Education, as Minister for Children and Education, Zoltán Tanács, an IT and management consultant, has been appointed Minister for Science and Technology.

The new Hungarian government, comprising 16 ministers, was sworn in on 12/05/2026. Magyar won the elections on 12/04, ending Viktor Orbán's 16-year premiership.

Addressing parliament, where he holds a two-thirds majority, Magyar said the new administration would focus on restoring public trust, improving governance and rebuilding Hungary's international ties.

Roles and priorities for education and science ministers

According to the new reforms Magyar aims to implement, education minister Judit Lannert, together with the finance, justice and health ministers, will have veto power on any legislation before it goes to parliament to provide a check on the prime minister’s power.
