Erasmus Student Network calls for Hungarian institutions to rejoin mobility scheme immediately

The Erasmus Student Network (ESN) has urged the immediate restoration of full participation by Hungarian higher education institutions in the Erasmus+ programme.

On 18/05/2026, ESN said: "Hungarian students have endured long enough with reduced access to a programme that is fundamental to European higher education cooperation."

ESN called on:
• the Hungarian government to urgently implement required reforms on governance, transparency in public fund management and conflict of interest prevention, including in public-interest foundations, as well as for the continuation and development of the Pannónia Programme, Hungarian funding for international exchanges, as a co-financing tool for Erasmus+ mobility.

• the European Commission to support resolution of the situation through constructive engagement and clear guidance, and the Council of the European Union to lift or amend existing measures promptly.

In December 2022, the EU Council suspended new Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe funding for 34 Hungarian educational and cultural institutions. The 21 universities affected operate under a 2019…
