Eight European University Alliances are calling for urgent reforms to Erasmus+ mobility funding, arguing that the 12-month mobility limit should be removed to enable the effective delivery of Joint Programmes.

In a position paper published on 29/05/2026, the alliances said: "One of the most effective instruments the EU already has at its disposal — Erasmus+ KA131 long-term mobility funding — remains constrained by a 12-month-per-cycle cap that effectively prevents its use to support students throughout the full duration of a Joint Programme."

The position paper proposed a targeted change to the Erasmus+ Programme Guide by exempting students enrolled in accredited Joint Programmes from the current 12-month mobility limit. It argued that this would be a simple, cost-effective and legally feasible way to make Joint Programmes more inclusive and sustainable.

The measure would support the European Degree initiative, enhance the role of National Agencies in facilitating Joint Programmes and could be implemented without amending the Erasmus+ Regulation.
