The European Association of Research and Technology Organisations (EARTO) and the European Patent Office (EPO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on a new framework for co-operation.

The MoU, which was signed on 10/06/2026 during the EARTO Annual Conference in Brussels, reflects the shared commitment of the EPO and EARTO to fostering innovation and strengthening Europe’s competitiveness through the effective use of intellectual property (IP).

It was founded on the recognition of the strategic value of intellectual property rights (IPRs), and patents in particular, as key drivers of economic development and innovation. The MoU also acknowledges the essential role of knowledge and technology transfer, as well as IP commercialisation, in transforming research results into societal and economic impact.

The agreement underlines the importance of cooperation and information exchange in the areas of outreach, awareness-raising and education related to patents, IPRs, knowledge and technology transfer and IP commercialisation.
