EU budget 2027: Commission proposes €12.8bn for Horizon Europe and €4.5bn for Erasmus+

The European Commission published its estimates for funding needs for 2027 on 10/06/2026, proposing €12.838 billion for Horizon Europe, a total of €13.806bn for research & innovation, as well as €4.511bn for Erasmus+.

The draft 2027 budget for Horizon Europe amounts to €12.839 billion, €155 million less than the 2026 allocation of €12.994 billion, representing a decrease of 1.19%. For R&I, the proposed budget is €13.806 billion in 2027, compared with €14.144 billion in 2026, corresponding to a decrease of 2.39%. By contrast, the Erasmus+ budget is set to increase from €4.429 billion in 2026 to €4.511 billion in 2027, representing a rise of 1.86%.

The Commission has allocated the Horizon Europe budget as follows:
• Excellent Science (Pillar I): €3.422bn;
• Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (Pillar II): €6.367bn;
• Innovative Europe (Pillar III): €1.586bn;
• Widening Participation and Strengthening the European Research Area: €446m;
• Horizontal Operational Activities: €154m;
• Support Expenditure for Horizon Europe: €861m.
