ERC announces 319 winners of Advanced Grants 2025 including 13 researchers from outside Europe

The European Research Council (ERC) has announced that it will distribute a total of €838 million amongst 319 leading researchers across Europe in its 2025 call. By comparison, the ERC awarded 281 Advanced Grants in 2024, totalling €721m.

In an announcement on 23/06/2026, the ERC said that 13 of those 319 researchers are based outside Europe but applied for grants under the banner of a European institution. Nine of them are from the United States, two from Australia, and two from Canada. They represent 4% of all awardees.

Since the launch of the Choose Europe for Science initiative, the ERC has allowed researchers relocating from outside Europe to request up to €2m in additional funding to establish new laboratories or research teams in Europe. Of these 13 researchers, seven applied for the additional relocation funding.

The ERC said that interest from researchers outside Europe also increased significantly, with 164 applications submitted in 2025, up from 44 applications in 2024.
