Charlie Jeffery appointed Vice-Chancellor and President of University of Southampton

Charlie Jeffery has been appointed Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Southampton, the university announced on 23/06/2026. He will take up the position on 01/10/2026.

Professor Jeffery has served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of York since 2019. Previously, he held the position of Senior Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh from 2014 to 2019 and chaired the Political Studies Association of the UK from 2009 to 2012. He also served as a member of the Economic and Social Research Council from 2006 to 2012.

In a statement, the university said that Jeffery "will lead the creation of a pioneering new Institute for Medical Innovation, bringing together engineers, clinicians and computer scientists to accelerate the discovery of life-changing treatments and technologies". He will also expand the university’s international reach, strengthen its role as a civic partner at the heart of the region and advance its commitments to sustainability and inclusion.
