Swiss Federal Council votes in Günther Dissertori as next President of ETH Zurich

The Swiss Federal Council confirmed Günther Dissertori as the next President of the public university ETH Zurich, at the request of the ETH Board.

Dissertori is the current rector of ETH Zurich and will take his functions on 01/01/2027, succeeding Joël Mesot, who finishes his second term in office, the Swiss institution announced on 24/06/2026.

The selection process for the new Rector will be kicked off immediately and his successor will be nominated by professors and voted on by the ETH Board.

Dissertori has served as Professor of Particle Physics since 2001 and he was named Rector, Deputy President and member of the ETH Zurich Executive Board in 2022.

The university described Dissertori as a "distinguished scientist" who has emphasised working together with the private sector. He was already behind several projects and initiatives launched by ETH Zurich in the past years, "developing a comprehensive vision for teaching, strengthening project-based teaching formats and proactively pushing for the strategic integration of AI into the curriculum".
