China overtakes rivals in annual research output while EU leads over last ten years

A study has shown that China has a massive annual output of research articles and journals and has a significantly larger research budget. The EU has a slight historical lead over the last ten years,

Clarivate’s Institute for Scientific Information, an organisation structuring global research information, published on 09/07/2026 its 2026 report providing a detailed assessment of the research and innovation performance of G20 members.

Among the key findings of the report, there were:

• Mainland China has exceeded one million research publications in a single year, further consolidating its position as the world's largest research producer. At the same time, collaboration with the United States has declined as domestic research capacity continues to expand.
