Switzerland leads 2026 European Innovation Scoreboard for the ninth year in a row

Switzerland has come top of the European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS) for the ninth year in a row, according to the latest edition.

The European Commission published the 2026 Scoreboard on 09/07/2026, saying that Switzerland led all European countries with a score of 141.28% compared to the average of the EU27. The Commission said: "Four of the EU neighbouring countries score above the EU average in 2026, namely Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Norway and Iceland."

Sweden remained the EU's most innovative member state, ahead of Denmark in second place and the Netherlands in third, with no change in the top three rankings. Sweden's score, according to the Summary Innovation Index (SII), was 139.06 in 2026 while Denmark's was 134.66. The Netherlands' was 127.41.
