Higher education experts have called for an urgent discussion on the future of university alliances.

During the 4^th European Universities Initiative Forum at Maynooth University on 10/07/2026, Ludovic Thilly, coordinator of the alliances' organisation ForEU4All, stated: "The clock is ticking... The investment pathway has never been so urgent. We absolutely now need all the colleagues, all the directorates of the European Commission, all the member states and the whole sector to really discuss together: do we really want the alliances to continue? It's now or never."
