Council cuts EU budget for 2027 ahead of talks with European Parliament

The Council of the EU has agreed its position on the budget for 2027, reducing the total amount by €1.004 billion compared to the European Commission’s draft.

The Council’s position, which will have to be negotiated with the European Parliament, foresees €12.6bn for Horizon Europe, €13.494bn for research and innovation and €4.4bn for Erasmus+ next year.

The Commission’s draft had proposed a total budget of €191.878bn for 2027, of which €12.839bn was allocated to Horizon, €13.806bn for research and innovation and €4.511bn for Erasmus+.

In 2026, the EU allocated €12.994bn for Horizon, €13.806bn for R&I, and €4.429 billion for Erasmus+.
