Japan officially joins Horizon Europe

The European Commission has announced that Japan has been officially associated to Horizon Europe, the EU's research and innovation programme, as of 30/07/2026.

The Commission and Japan successfully concluded negotiations on Japan's association to Horizon Europe on 22/12/2025, after the formal negotiations launched on 29/11/2024 and exploratory talks closed on 12/09/2022.

Commission said Japan contributed financially to the programme's budget to support the participation of Japanese entities.

Japan's association covers Horizon Europe’s Pillar II, which funds multinational research and innovation projects addressing major societal challenges, including climate, energy, health and the digital economy, with a budget of €52.4 billion.
