European Commission launches AI Office supported by 60 independent AI experts

The European Commission and national authorities will launch their AI Office, which will be supported by a Scientific Panel, an expert advisory body made up of 60 independent AI experts.

The Commission explained on 31/07/2026 that the AI Office will be launched on 02/08/2026, together with new transparency rules in the AI Act, like requiring AI systems to disclose when users are interacting with AI rather than humans.

The Commission also announced the appointment of Alessandro Abate, Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford, as Lead Scientific Adviser to the AI Office. He will support the Office's scientific work on general-purpose AI models, including their innovation, adoption, testing and evaluation.
