Spain funds salaries of 3,400 PhD-qualified university lecturers for the first time in 2026

The Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities has announced the transfer of around €150 million to the regions to fund the recruitment of assistant lecturers with PhDs at universities.

The Ministry agreed on 04/09/2026 to fund, through the autonomous communities, the salaries of 3,400 assistant lecturers with PhDs at public universities throughout Spain as part of the María Goyri programme. The autonomous community of Catalonia is the one that will receive the largest allocation from the government.

The Ministry explained that this is the first time a Spanish Government has taken responsibility for university lecturers’ salaries, within the framework of a power that has been devolved to the autonomous communities.
