European Commission awards €64,500 to young scientists

The European Commission has announced the winners of the 2026 EU Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS).

The 37^th EUCYS came to a close on 27/09/2026 in Kiel, Germany, with the announcement of the winners. The winning projects shared a total prize fund of €64,500.

The EUCYS 2026 awarded first prizes (€7,000 each) to four groups of young scientists:

• Tommaso Vaninetti, Abdoellah El Makkaoui and Frida Tirari from Italy for their project ‘PlantLeaf - a system to detect and analyse plants’ reactions to stress’;
• Kazimierz Jakub Chomicz from Poland for his project ‘Chicken McNugget problem in embedding dimension four’;
• Nikoloz Tkebuchava and Lizi Chachua from Georgia for their project ‘In Silico Analysis of Conservation and Structure of FAM163A and Its Potential Role in Cancer’;
