European leaders condemn Russian drone strike on Science Academy of Ukraine

Leaders from the European Commission and heads of European countries have condemned a Russian drone attack on the Science Academy of Ukraine that killed one civilian.

The Russian army sent a drone into the headquarters of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU) on 28/09/2026, which killed a NASU administrator and set the building on fire, leading many other people to evacuate through windows. A section of the historic building was destroyed.

"Today, science became a target for Russia. My heart goes out to the heroes searching for people trapped inside Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences (...). Europe is working harder than ever to strengthen Ukraine’s defence," Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, declared.
