163 UK universities awarded Erasmus+ Charter ahead of country rejoining EU mobility programme

In total, 163 UK higher education providers have been awarded an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE), a mandatory accreditation that universities and further education colleges must hold to apply for and secure funding under the EU's Erasmus+ programme.

The European Commission awarded the ECHE to 163 UK institutions on 25/09/2026, ahead of the country officially rejoining Erasmus+ on 01/01/2027. Holding a valid ECHE is the key prerequisite for institutions to offer student and staff mobilities or collaborative partnerships.

Universities UK (UUK), the advocacy organisation for universities in the UK, added that the process saw a 98% success rate for UK institutions. The country also has more than half of its 304 higher education providers now accredited.
