Report shows that fragmentation of European R&I system brakes economic growth

A European Commission report indicates that fragmentation of the EU's research and innovation (R&I) system is hindering the EU's ability to achieve better economic performance.

The 6th edition of the Science, Research and Innovation Performance of the EU (SRIP) report was published on 01/10/2026. At its launch event, Paolo Pasimeni, Chief Economist at the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD), said: "Investment in R&D and innovation is worthwhile, provided we manage to adjust and improve several framework conditions. In particular, we should improve the structure of our R&D system to achieve scale by reducing fragmentation and improving conditions."
