Marco Sgarbi becomes youngest rector of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice

Marco Sgarbi, a 44-year-old philosopher, has become the youngest rector of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice in Italy.

Sgarbi took over as rector on 01/10/2026 for a six-year term. He was elected in May 2026 to take over the position after Tiziana Lippiello. He notably intends to transform how Ca’ Foscari approaches European collaboration through the alliance EUTOPIA, of which it is a member.

According to Sgarbi, internationalisation must become part of the studies and international experience should be ”structural, recognisable and programmed” into every curriculum. "Internationalisation must become a lever for quality and equity, not an opportunity reserved for a few," he said.

He highlighted concrete changes like identifying recommended mobility periods within each course structure…
