EU allocates €65 million in data underpinning biomedical research and AI tools for biotechnology

The European Commission has allocated €65 million to safeguard scientific data essential to biomedical research and the development of AI tools for biotechnology, including data on genes, proteins and scientific discoveries.

On 06/10/2026, the Commission announced the launch of three grants and a call as part of the recently amended work programme of Horizon Europe for 2026-2027.

The €65m will be allocated as follows:
• GENCODE - €19m: for data on genes and their role in health and disease;
• UniProt - €30m: for data on proteins and their functions, for biomedical research and biotechnology;
• Europe PMC - €8m: access to scientific literature in the life sciences and associated data;
• A further €8m will be allocated via a competitive call for proposals to strengthen other essential…
