MEPs call on the Council of the EU not to reduce the EU's Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2028-2034 below the level proposed by the European Commission, warning that such cuts would limit investment in research, innovation and competitiveness, among other areas.

They were speaking during a debate on the MFF in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 07/10/2026, in the presence of an Irish minister representing the presidency of the Council.

Siegfried Mureșan, a Romanian centre-right MEP who drafted the EP's report on the EU's 2028-2034 budget, said the Parliament considered the Commission's proposal insufficient, as the EU "cannot do more with the same amount of money".
