From fragmented experiments to institutional frameworks: Italy’s higher education AI turning point

Over 100 academic leaders gathered at Palazzo Brancaccio in Rome for the third edition of the Higher Education Leader Serie have discussed the need to evolve beyond isolated digital trials toward structured, university-wide AI frameworks.

The summit was held on 08/10/2026 and was co-hosted for the first time by Google for Education and the Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities (CRUI). It brought together rectors, pro-rectors, general managers and delegates from across Italy to exchange strategies on integrating Artificial Intelligence into teaching, research and campus administration.

Gianluigi Greco, CRUI Delegate and Rector of the University of Calabria, stressed that higher education must move past fragmented technological experimentation in favour of systemic governance.
