PSL Research University Paris (France) is the first European institution ranked in the Times Higher Education Young University Ranking 2024, published on 14/05/2024 and showing the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger.

The French university appears in second place (up from third last year), after Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), arriving first for the second consecutive year, and before The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

The next European universities ranked are Maastricht University (The Netherlands) at 10th, the University of Antwerp (Belgium) at 12th, and Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies - Pisa (Italy) at 13th.

The European country with the most entries is the UK with 38 universities ranked, followed by Spain (31), France (20) and Italy (19).

On the global scale, Turkey (58 universities ranked), India (55) and Iran (46) are making significant progress as the number of Asian universities listed "has nearly doubled in five years", according to THE.

Joining the emerging territories, Pakistan has 33 universities ranked in 2024 and Nigeria has 10.

The 2024 ranking includes 673 universities, among which France's universities all improve from 2023.

"The universities are judged across all their core missions - teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook - to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available", says THE.

The methodology

The THE Times Higher Education  Young University Rankings apply the same methodology as the World University Rankings to assess research-intensive universities across all their core missions, but the weightings are recalibrated to reflect the profile of missions of young universities.

This edition introduces significant updates to the original methodology to ensure that the rankings continue to reflect the outputs of the diverse range of research-intensive universities across the world, according to THE.

"We have moved from 13 to 18 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments."

The performance indicators are grouped into five areas:

  • "Teaching (the learning environment);
  • Research Environment (volume, income and reputation);
  • Research Quality (citation impact, research strength, research excellence and research influence);
  • International Outlook (staff, students and research);
  • and Industry (income and patents)."

"One of the metrics (study abroad) currently has zero weight but will be counted in future", adds THE.

When a university is in a range, the rank shown in the table is the lowest in that range.
