The European Commission has announced that 19 of the 20 European university alliances from the 2019 and 2022 rounds will receive additional funding until 2028, and that one new alliance will receive funding.

On 09/07/2026, the Commission published the names of the 20 winning alliances from the sixth call for proposals for European university alliances, which has a budget of €145.6 million. Each of the selected alliances will receive up to €7.2m, with activities starting in autumn-winter 2026.

It covers two years of funding, bridging the gap between the end of funding for 19 alliances of the first and third waves (renewed or starting in 2022) and the start of the next Erasmus+ programme for 2028-2034 under the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF Multiannual financial framework ). Unigreen, a third-wave alliance, will not have its funding extended.

The Commission has, however, allocated funding to a new alliance, ELLS: EuroLeague of Life Science Universities. It was a previous Seal of Excellence holder, which indicates that their project was not selected through the call for projects due to a lack of funding.

ELLS comprises 10 institutions:

• Czech University of Agriculture in Prague,
• University of Life Sciences,
• Hohenheim University, Denmark,
• National Institute of Higher Education for Agriculture, Food and the Environment, France,
• Norwegian University of Environment and Life Sciences,
• Polish University of Agriculture and Rural Development,
• Swedish University of Agriculture,
• University of Lleida, Spain,
• University of Tuscia, Italy,
• Wageningen University, The Netherlands.
